

Basho Matsuo

Basho Matsuo was the first respected poet to wo write a haiku.

He wanted to work in the water department so he move to Edo from being samurai.

Basho got his name from a banana (basho) tree that one of his supporters planted when he moved into a cottage in 1680. After that him and his house was known as Basho.

The haiku was gradually developed by Basho when he would have competions with his friends where they would make a linked verse called renga, this would contain 2 or 3 joined lines.

In 1684 Basho went on 5 journeys to very far stretched places in Japan and he would use haiku's to describe the plaxe around or what he was feeling.

Through this way his fame spread rapidly then evreyone started to welcome him in the places he arrived.

Even though he travelled by foot & horseback and had to carry his own supplies he would still make sure he would sit in the evening with locals of the area he's in and exchange verses.

This was a tribute to Basho and an accomplishment for the ones that met him.

A bee
staggers out
of the peony.
Awake at night,
the lamp low,
the oil freezing.
The sea darkening-
the wild duck's call
is faintly white.

A haiku poem has three lines and usually five or seven syllables. The language used is very simple and is used to give the reader a certain emotion.

Haiku poems showed Japanese beleifs and portrayed that big ideas can be found in little things.
